WHY IS READING SO DIFFICULT?

Our English written language is confusing and can seem unpredictable. Learning how to read and spell with accuracy takes time and explicit instructions. You see, our language is phonetic and this means that each sound in a word has a symbol to represent it. For example the sound /r/ has the letter r to symbolize it. We also have sounds with two or more letters, like /sh/ as in ship or /eigh/ as in eight. To make it even more confusing, the letter combination /ow/ has two sounds. It can be /ow/ as in cow or /ow/ as in snow. Without explicit instructions reading can become confusing and frustrating to anyone.

Beginning readers who do not receive explicit instructions can make false assumptions about reading. Some children believe they must remember the entire word, instead of learning to decode the word one sound at a time from left to right. Once children pick up on some of these bad habits, learning to read and spell accurately becomes much more difficult and breaking these habits can take a lot of time and extra energy.

Reading is also more then just 'decoding' the sounds, it is also comprehension. In order for individuals to grasp meaning from text, several skills must be activated. Some of those skills are reading fluency, visualization and word recognition.
